History
Sarlat-la-Caneda
1081-Present
Sarlat is a medieval town that developed around a large Benedictine abbey. There are records of this abbey as early as 1081 and it was one of the few in the region that was not raided by the Vikings. The emblem or symbol of Sarlat is not a goose or a duck as one might think, but actually a salamander. Many believe that this was due to King François I having a salamander as his animal-emblem during the French Renaissance (1515-1547). You can see it at the top of the Cathedral tower and also in in other places in the city.
Sarlat has remained a preserved medieval town due to modern history passing it by and is one of the towns most representative of 14th-century France. Its historic centre was added to France’s tentative list for future nomination as a UNESCO World Heritage Site . André Malraux, who was the Minister of Culture from 1960-1969, helped restore Sarlat. The centre of the old town consists of impeccably restored stone buildings and is mostly car-free. This is where locals and tourists alike can enjoy the twice weekly markets throughout the year, in addition to shops, restaurants, bars and festivals.

Your Hosts
Kristen Christopher Blue
Bonjour and welcome to our site! In 2023, Christopher and I embarked on a transformative journey that led us to make a bold life change. After extensive research and careful planning, we took the leap, leaving our teaching careers behind at the end of the school year, and set our sights on France in 2024. Our aspiration was to immerse ourselves in a new culture, explore the wonders of Europe, learn a new language, and embrace a lifestyle centered around health, family, and our dreams. This vision gave birth to Blue Horizons Farm. We envisioned a quaint working farm featuring a sprawling organic garden, abundant fruit trees, purposeful animals, and a welcoming space for guests to experience the tranquility of the countryside alongside the vibrant tourism of Sarlat and its enchanting surroundings. This Spring, we are thrilled to begin cultivating our garden outdoors and welcoming a variety of animals, including chickens, rabbits, sheep, pigs, and bees! During your stay, we invite you to explore our garden and animal enclosures, as well as enjoy the private outdoor spaces of the Gîte. Should you desire a personalized tour or any information, we are here to assist! Our mission is to ensure our guests feel at home and enjoy their vacation to the fullest. Christopher and I are dedicated to making your stay in Sarlat truly memorable, personalized, and uniquely special. As we embark on this adventure, we look forward to sharing our experiences with you, fostering a warm and inviting atmosphere where every guest becomes a cherished part of our family. We believe that every moment spent at Blue Horizons Farm should be filled with joy, laughter, and unforgettable memories.
